  • Letter to the newspaper..... "We Have Our Son Back!"

Around the middle of April, I decided to write a letter to one of the local newspapers and outline what I thought would be an interesting "special interest" story for them. It was about the friendship Ashton and Marc share (which I've posted about a couple of times previously) and how much Marc has changed Ashton's life over the last year. I went back and forth with one of the editors a few times, but last week got a response from one of the reporters. She's interested in covering the story and will be observing the guys this week before she actually writes the story sometime in mid-late June. Below is what I wrote in......

  • You Will Always Be Criticized

In an effort to make a positive from a negative; lemonade from lemons, I write this. Recently I posted this message for my Galaxy Zento page of heroes that I write about and draw.

With your help and sharing, my project to inspire others with my Galaxy Zento project has been growing, slowly, but growing. I know it can grow more. The simple truth is, the more people who click like on Galaxy Zento, the more people it will reach. The more who share it with its message the more likely that will happen. I have a modest goal that I would like to reach by the end of next month. I would like the page to reach 1000 "likes". Can you help? Do you know anyone who loves original content, characters, and stories? How about practicing artists? Anyone who just wants to practice their art skills and get posted as a guest artist? As I'm preparing to post GZ Legends 50 (a milestone post!) I want to spread the word. I want people to know that you can still do what you love, or find something to love doing even with disabilities. You can still grow as a person. You can still inspire others. I will always support autism education and projects that help people grow as human beings. You can help me make this grow. What do you say folks? Its not enough that I share to you, when you share it reaches your people. So, give it a twitter and give it a share. Let others know that a guy with multiple conditions is striving to inspire. This week, I go to see my second oldest daughter graduate. So there will be some delays on other postings. A great time for your help. Love you all! Be blessed and inspired.

  • Eating Xbox Controllers

So my son has developed a new habit/stim/quirk/etc and that is chewing stuff. In the winter, he chewed his coat and his hat and his gloves. Since those were replaced with.. uhmm… nothing, it’s warm… he’s now taken to chewing other random odd things. Most notably, video game remotes.   Continue reading

  • Do Kids With Autism Eventually Learn to Speak?

An exciting headline that recently caught my eye claimed that a recent study published in Pediatrics found that most children with autism eventually do learn to speak. This claim piqued my curiosity because autism and language is a very big deal; therefore, I had to actually see what the authors in the study found.

  • Book Review: Healing Waters

As an adult with autism, this book blew my mind. As a sports enthusiast, I’ve always been delighted to read stories about the underdog. Seeing that this particular underdog, in a young boy named Scotty, was also diagnosed with Asperger’s made me relate so much to what was written here. Even though this is a fictional piece, I felt like this story was pulling at my heartstrings throughout. (

  • What is free time?

It's often hard to think back to my pre mama years. Not that 7 years ago is that far back, but more like my brain doesn't compute that time. Though I do often find myself nostalgic as to  what I did in my free time, and what it was like. Free time nowadays is few and far between for me. I often envy the mothers that get the 8 hour school day break from their kiddos. But then I look at my boy and  I am truly grateful I get to be his teacher.   Continue reading

  • What Is and the Is-ness of It...

Descending down the long-tall escalator at one of our local cinemas the other night, my friend and I glided by the gargantuan movie posters. We chuckled at the silly characters, such as the one-eyed, green monster wearing braces who was so ugly he was cute. Passing by each, I remarked, "I'll take Grace to see that this summer!" "Yeah, let's do!" my friend exclaimed, excitedly. Reaching the bottom floor, we walked down the corridor toward our theater and it hit me: I'd been dreading this summer.

  • Among His People

I had a lump in my throat this morning as I put my sweet boy on the school bus.  My baby who flapped his hands when his Dad's car backed out of the driveway.  My baby who gleefully said "See May" because he loves the calendar.  My sweet boy who - after I had said it - parroted right back to me, complete with the inflection and tone I used, the most beautiful phrase to come out of his mouth:
