  • No Such Thing As False Hope

Yesterday as I scrolled through Facebook, I came upon a link to an article about a recent study involving children with autism who recover. The article danced around word “recover.” When I “googled” the story later, the majority of the headlines about the study had titles such as “Can Some Children ‘Lose’ Autism Diagnosis?” as if autism was something they accidentally left in the developmental pediatrician’s waiting room. Some of the experts interviewed talked about kids “outgrowing” their diagnosis. No one used the term “recover.”

  • A Little Sad to See Him Go

After a 9-day stretch without hearing that familiar rallying cry of the braking of a school bus, Jack's Spring Break came to an end this morning.  For some reason, this Spring Break seemed to fly by.  No, we didn't go anywhere (we not ready for that, yet).  It wasn't all blissful; in fact, some days it really, really wasn't.  A lot of our therapists were out-of-town last week, so Jack only got a couple of his 6 regular weekly therapy sessions.  Yet, I wasn't necessarily thrilled to relinquish my boy back to his school bus this morning.

  • BINGO: How Not to Have a Conversation about Disability

Top row: You're not sufficiently disabled to speak to this issue.
Everything is about disability to you people.
Disability is NOT a civil rights issue.
You're just bitter because you're disabled.
The lift is broken. We're sorry for the inconvenience.  Continue reading

  • Starting His ESY Program

Tomorrow Sam starts his ESY program. I am so excited for him... and me.

It's been a rough week. Sam has decided it's fun to do the exact opposite of everything I say right now. It's infuriating to say the very least. We have a lot going on right now and i think that might be part of it. The change in routine and everything else may just be too much for him.  Continue reading

  • Do you share these Fears?

Autism awareness, for many, only includes the facts and figures, the stories of heartache and the “struggle” that the media likes to talk about so much. It gives parents so much fear in their hearts that some just outright refuse to have children just to avoid the risk of having a child of their own with autism.   Continue reading
