  • A Few Things to Consider

To be aware of something is to “have knowledge of”, according to the dictionary. I think a more accurate description would be “to be conscious of the existence of”, especially when it comes to autism.

  • Desire to see vs. sensory issues

Emmett never fails to amaze me.  As sensory sensitive as he is, his desire to actually see his world is stronger than the sensory issues screaming st him to take the glasses off.  Continue reading

  • Open Your Eyes and Listen

I'll admit, after yesterday my resolve was a bit shaken.  How could I - as a mother - continue to send my child out into a world where even the people who are supposed to understand him fall woefully short?

  • Our Friends at Autism Speaks are Seeking your Help

Our Friends at Autism Speaks asked us to spread the word about a survey they are encouraging people to fill out.

As many in our community know, over the course of the next decade, more than 500,000 individuals with autism will enter adulthood.

Finding secure housing and residential supports for adults with Autism can be very challenging.

The folks at Autism Speaks want to quantify and characterize the housing needs of individuals with autism in the United Stats through the first-of-its-kind National Housing and Residential Supports Survey.

We encourage everyone to take about 10-15 minutes to fill out this survey.

The survey is designed for individuals with autism ages 14 and older and their caregivers. They would especially like to encourage more individuals with Autism to fill it out.

Please be assured that the information that people provide will be confidential.

I don't know if we've seen real benefits from NT yet, but I can say definitively that the electrodes the nurse connects to Ryan's head do stimulate his brain in some way.

I know this because the nurse found Ryan's Reset button.  Continue reading

  • Autism Light: United States

As of today there is at least one Autism Light from every state in the United States of America featured on this blog. Some of the larger states like California and New York have several Autism Lights but each state has at least one.

  • Chores and Preparing for the Future

One of the most important things you will give your children, as parents, is an understanding of the work ethic. It is important that they learn how to organize and run their days so that they can become productive adults. It is also important that they understand what it means to work, and are allowed the pride and feeling of accomplishment that comes along with a job well done. The way to start them on this path is to assign to them typical everyday chores from as early an age as possible.

  • Special Needs Ryan Gosling - When People Stare

Coming out of blog-hiatus at least for now to join in on Special Needs Ryan Gosling with Sunday at Adventures in Extreme Parenting. I found this meme last summer, right about the time she stopped doing it for a while (of course! lol) so I never had a chance to participate and thought it looked like fun.

And now she's brought it back, yay! :D   Continue reading

Today was a really crazy day and while I’m glad it’s over, there were some really good moments and this was one of them.  Continue reading
