Getting an IPad
I was moved to tears when I opened the box. Inside the box I discovered a brand new Ipad for my son. My husband and I talked about getting one for our son for months, but the high price tag was something that we couldn’t ignore. I looked everywhere. I looked and evaluated every used Ipad I came across. I contemplated buying the Android tablets, but I always came back to the Ipad. My husband and I have 4 children and he was the only one working. I finished school and just stated a working couple hours a week and we just could not afford to buy one.
I received and e-mail from Autism Speaks about a new grant for Ipads. I immediately attempted to fill an application but the site was not working. I waited another day and tried again, and it worked. I was sure that our chances were slim considering the demand was high but I kept the hope alive for few days. I received an e-mail stating that we didn’t get one and I understood it was long shot. Three days later we came home and there was a box by the door. I read the label and wondered if it was some helpful kits from Autism Speaks. I already had some at home but was always ready to read more.
I took the box downstairs without saying a work while my husband and the children went upstairs. I opened the box, and I saw the logo…I could not believe it. I read the letter that congratulated us for receiving a new Ipad for our son. I ran to my husband saying “Oh my God”. I covered my mouth with my hand and could not say anything else. He looked worried as I handed him the letter. He read it while I was standing in the kitchen in disbelief. We hugged each other and hardly could hold back tears. Our two oldest daughters were a little worried and we assured them that we were OK and it was good news. We didn’t tell them about the wonderful gift we received. It was only few days before Christmas and we wanted to wait. It was truly a wonderful Christmas gift, a gift from God with the help of some wonderful organizations.
When I finally had a chance I looked through my e-mail and discovered a second e-mail was sent the previous day letting us know that we would be receiving a new Ipad. I missed that e-mail and received a wonderful surprise. My son loved his new Ipad and if given the opportunity he would spend his entire day playing on it. I found some great apps with the help of my son’s speech therapist and OT, and my new boss. I am always on the lookout for useful apps. This app has been a blessing.
Thank you Autism Speaks.
